Activities at Brockmead Campsite

Brockmead Scout Campsite offers a number of activities to compliment your Scout Camp’s program, ranging from adventurous activities to simply having fun.

Low Ropes Course

Lasts approx. 30 mins per group of 6-8 people.

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

Most of this course is at waist height and is attractively located in the woods. Low ropes course elements include a cargo net and a wire, a large tube to go through or along the top of, planks with ropes or holding points, tyres wired to form a bridge and finally a small zip line to get you back to the start. It tests balance, determination and ingenuity.

The course is suitable for 5-to 14 years. Low ropes challenges youngsters and provides opportunities for team building. You can make it as easy or as hard as you like by using blindfolds or carrying water around in teams. You will need 2 adults for this activity

Tunnels

Lasts approx. 30 mins per group of 6-8 people.

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

This activity is under the decking at the main troop room and bunk room complex and has an entry and an exit door.

You need to use your own torch and wear long trousers and long sleeved t-shirt. You enter the tunnels and go straight ahead, turn right into a tunnel about 20 feet long. There are three more tunnels further back under the decking or you can exit sooner if unsure. It is very muddy when it has been raining.

This activity is for 5-14 years. Tunnel games might include hide and seek or searching for hidden objects. You can make this activity easy or harder by, for instance, working without torches! You will need 1 adult for this activity

Bouldering Wall

Lasts approx. 30 mins per group of 6-8 people.

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

This activity is best suited to Beavers and Cubs.

The bouldering wall is about seven feet high and on the lower outside face of the troop room and bunk room complex. The wall is traversed using the different coloured hand and foot holds. The level of difficulty can be increased by timing the child or by specifying the use of only particular colours. Other bouldering wall games depend on the ingenuity of leaders and the athletic ability of the climbers!

Indoor Climbing Wall

Each Session lasts approx. 45 mins for 6–8 persons.

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

This is an exciting and challenging new addition to the activities available.

Approximately 3 metres wide and 5 metres high with two belays allowing two climbers on the wall, each protected by a partner operating a belay. This activity is more strenuous and challenging activity than the bouldering wall, requiring teamwork, co-operation and trust.

This activity is for 10-25 years and requires at least 1 adult for younger participants.

Grass Sledges

Each session lasts 1.5 hours

Price: £10 per session

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

This is a fun activity that takes place on the grass hill with 3 sledges available per session. Beavers, cubs and scouts need a safety briefing at the start of the course explaining how to control the sledges using the brakes. An adult is needed to hold the cart while the rider gets in (bottom first, then legs whilst holding the brakes on). On release the sledge will slide down the hill steered and eventually stopped by use of the brakes. At the bottom of the hill there is a tyre wall where another adult needs to be to assist. The rider then pulls the cart back to the start at the top of the hill.

This activity is for 5-14 years, although size restrictions may apply. You will need 2 adults for this activity.

This activity cannot take place if the water slide is being used.

Go-Karts

Each session lasts 1.5 hours

Price: £30 per session

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

There are 4 go-karts. They are raced in the (flat) grass car park. Teams construct their own course using the motor tyres provided. Go-kart racing is a fun and strenuous activity.

This activity is for 5 – 14 years (size restrictions) and requires 2 leaders for an optimum 12 participants.

Camp Fire Circle

We recommend hot chocolate and a hot-dog

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

There is a separate campfire area within the campsite. There is a raised campfire circle at its centre where you can practice lighting fires or have a camp fire sing song. There is a wood pile, but safety at all times, please, with sensible footwear and no climbing. Keep all wood that is being lit in the circle area and have water available at all times if needed. There is a small under cover seating area for activities. That, and a covered in stage area opposite, means that in bad weather the campfire circle can still be used. There is also a small wooden roundhouse in one corner of the campfire site.

Campfire songs, stories and sketches are an essential part of your camp, creating memories and developing acting and social skills.

This activity is for 5-25 years. Recommend 2 adults at least in this activity for safety

There is water near by to control the fire if needed.

Mud Ovens

You will need your own utensils, ingredients, recipes and oven gloves!

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

There are 2 wood fired mud ovens in the bank of the campfire circle and 2 stainless steel tables to prepare any food you wish to cook in the ovens. Light the fires in the fire trays at the bottom. When the fires have died down to embers the ovens will be very hot. Oven gloves will be needed to open and close the doors. The ovens cook brilliant pizza or bread and lots more in very little time! Mud oven cooking is a fun and rewarding separate activity, that could be incorporated into your campfire session.

This activity is for 5-25 years and you will need 2 adults

We recommend the following safety equipment:
Oven gloves (not provided) and water for the fires (nearby).

Pioneering poles (plus pond use)

Will your raft sink or swim; will your bridge hold you up?

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

Pioneering is another essential part of many camps. There are 20 longer (12-15ft) pioneering poles and 20 shorter (6-8ft) pioneering poles kept behind the seating in the camp fire area. Leaders need to bring their own ropes, and it is recommended that two or more projects be planned beforehand. Leaders are also responsible for all aspects of safety. As an alternative to building structures such as bridges or towers, there are approx. 12 plastic barrels that can be used to make rafts for the pond.

This activity is for 5-25 years requiring 1-2 adults for structures and 2-3 adults for rafting.

Life jackets and helmets for the rafting supplied by the campsite

Air-Rifle Shooting

Each group of 6 will require approx. 30 minutes

Price: £35 per 1.5 hour session

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

Equipment Provided

The indoors air-rifle range is separate from the main building. Participants shoot from a counter at one end at paper targets in the ‘catchers’ at the far end of the range. The instructor will talk you through the safety and use of the guns. The guns are loaded by participants themselves.

The activity is for 8-25 years and needs 1 adult.
Safety equipment: safety glasses supplied by the campsite.

Zip wire

Each session lasts 1.5 hours

Price: £40 per session

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

This is a new activity installation. The 90 meter zip wire crosses a natural amphitheatre. There will be a safety briefing and instruction and help to put on the harnesses. Participants will be briefed again at the start of the ride when an instructor will attach them to the line. Another instructor at the other end will take them off the ride to return to the start for another go. The zip wire experience is exciting for all ages!

This activity is for 5-25 years and needs 1 adult to be with a group of 6 people.

We recommend allowing for a minimum of 30 minutes per 6 participants.

Crate stacking

Each session lasts 1.5 hours

Price: £40 per session

Leader Lead Activity

Equipment Provided

Another new activity installation. This is a team building exercise, and all participants wear a harness.

Two belays on a 9 metre high horizontal beam allow those taking part to build the crates into towers, protected from falling should the crate stacks collapse.

When the crates fall over, one or both persons attached to the belays, if on the top of the crates, can then be lowered (slowly) to the ground by the other participants for the next person to see how high they can build. Those taking part can work as two competing teams, or as a single group timing their efforts. The crate stack challenge is a new and exciting addition to the activities available on site.

This activity is for 8-25 years and needs 2 adults as it is recommended working in small competing groups of 6-8 to get maximum benefit from a 1.5 hour session.

Orienteering Course

Find all these posts takes approx 45 mins to complete.

Price: Free

Leader Lead Activity

Throughout the campsite are 26 posts with green tops bearing 26 numbers and 26 letters, one letter and one number on each post. There is a key code sheet supplied by the campsite. This can be used to make up your own words or sentences to be discovered by following the order of the numbers. Alternatively young people can make their own maps of where the posts are situated. Older persons could devise routes using compass bearings. Walking all around the campsite to find these posts takes approx 45 mins to complete. Orienteering games and competitions can be used to work towards the orienteering merit badge.

This activity is for 5-25 years and needs 1 adult per team for younger children.
